Rogers Satellite to Offer Essential Communication and Navigation Apps
Rogers Communication has unveiled a groundbreaking satellite program that brings essential communication and navigation apps to areas with no service. The program, which initially launched in beta in July, will be commercially available starting December 9, offering a range of popular apps.
Among the apps introduced in the recent launch are WhatsApp, Google Maps, Accuweather, C, and CalTopo. More apps are set to join the lineup as developers adapt their offerings for satellite compatibility.
Future plans for the program include expanding to provide data and voice services, including access to emergency services like 911, expected to roll out next year.
During the beta trial, over one million texts were sent, with hotspots of usage identified in locations such as Garibaldi in B.C. and Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario.
A recent survey conducted by Rogers revealed that 86% of Canadians believe satellite-to-mobile texting would offer peace-of-mind in areas with no cell service, while 89% see its value for travel through coverage gaps.
Rogers customers on select plans will receive Rogers Satellite at no extra cost, with a monthly subscription available to all for $15.
Additionally, Rogers will introduce a satellite-to-mobile service for IoT applications, enhancing connectivity for tasks such as fleet and asset tracking in remote regions and enabling sensor networks in industries like forestry and mining.
Rogers, the parent company of CityNews, continues to lead in innovative communication solutions.
