BC Hydro is currently dealing with power outages affecting over 100,000 homes and businesses following a storm that brought strong winds and heavy rain to the Lower Mainland on Wednesday morning.
Areas impacted by the power loss include Abbotsford, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Richmond, Langley, Delta, North and West Vancouver, and Vancouver. Outages are also being reported in the Upper Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gulf Islands.
BC Hydro’s spokesperson, Kevin Aquino, assured that their crews are working tirelessly to restore power promptly. Aquino emphasized the company’s readiness for storm seasons, with storm-response plans in place and crews strategically located throughout the province to swiftly address any issues.
Priority is given to ensuring the safety of the public and crews, with a focus on dealing with downed power lines first. Aquino attributed many of the outages to the impacts of climate change, noting that drought-weakened and damaged trees are more likely to come into contact with electrical infrastructure.
For a detailed list and map of the outages, individuals can visit the BC Hydro website. Meteorologist Michael Kuss from 1130 NewsRadio mentioned that the worst of the storm has passed, with winds subsiding, making it safer for crews to work on restoring power.
Drivers navigating areas with power outages are advised to adhere to four-way stop procedures at intersections without functioning traffic lights. Additionally, caution is urged due to potential hazards like fallen trees, standing water, and debris on the roadways.
