The Lower Mainland Won’t See a White Christmas, but Snowfall Warnings Issued for Major Highways
While a white Christmas may not be on the horizon for the Lower Mainland, snowfall alerts have been issued for regions encompassing key highways.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, significant snowfall is anticipated along the Coquihalla Highway and Fraser Canyon on Wednesday.
A weather system moving from the south is expected to bring around 10 centimetres of snow to the Fraser Canyon area and up to 15 centimetres along certain parts of the Coquihalla Highway. The Coquihalla Highway faced temporary closures on Monday night into Tuesday morning due to adverse weather conditions and multiple vehicle incidents.
Additionally, warnings are in place for a section of the Sea to Sky Highway between Squamish and Whistler. ECCC forecasts 15 to 25 centimetres of snowfall in the area until evening, with similar warnings issued for northern areas of Whistler.
The agency advises caution, as driving conditions are likely to be challenging with reduced visibility and possible road closures.
Prepare for the possibility of transportation disruptions, service interruptions, and utility issues, urges ECCC. It may be advisable to allocate extra travel time, use headlights, reduce speed, and maintain safe distances while driving.
