Smoke Blanketing British Columbia as Wildfires Rage On: BCWS Reports

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) reports 69 active wildfires as of 6 p.m. on Monday.

According to the BCWS, some areas of the province will see smokier conditions as a result of those ongoing wildfires.

The BCWS urges people living in areas of high smoke concentration to stay inside or to wear a ventilator mask outside.

The majority of the fires are under control or are being held, which means that they are not expected to grow and remain within the current perimeter.

15 fires, however, are out of control and can grow in size. Those fires have prompted four evacuation alerts and four evacuation orders.

Most recently, an evacuation order was issued for an area east of Princeton on Saturday and updated on Monday, July 14. The August Lake fire is currently 14 hectares in size and categorized as out of control.

While most fires are located in the northeast of B.C. (Prince George Fire Centre), there are currently nine fires burning in the Coastal Fire Centre region, the area with the highest population density of the province.

According to BCWS, 326 firefighting personnel are supporting local firefighters in the affected areas across the province.

Additionally, 69 aircraft are deployed throughout the province to help the firefighting efforts from the air.
