The REM railway project has achieved a significant milestone in the development of its airport branch, as a train made its inaugural journey on the track leading to Montréal–Trudeau International Airport.
This successful test run, which took place recently, signifies the commencement of the validation process for the track and communications systems in the final stretch of the 67-kilometre network.
CDPQ Infra, the organization overseeing the project, has stated that this milestone signals a consistent advancement towards the anticipated launch of the airport branch in 2027.
In other updates:
The REM has reported the completion of laying down the last kilometers of track up to the tail track adjacent to the YUL–Aéroport–Montréal–Trudeau station. Progress is also being made in the construction of the 2.5-kilometre tunnel towards the airport, with the Marie-Curie station nearing its final stages.
Moving forward, the focus will be on intensifying activities at the airport station, including the installation of essential rail systems and equipment like platform screen doors. These tasks are projected to continue throughout 2026, a critical year as highlighted by CDPQ Infra to ensure the project stays on track.
Close collaboration with Aéroports de Montréal, responsible for the construction of the airport station, will be crucial as the project transitions into its next phase.
Julien Hurel, vice-president of the REM project at CDPQ Infra, remarked, “The completion of a key milestone in 2025, which involved installing tracks within the airport station, is a significant achievement. Although there is more work ahead, especially at the airport station, our teams are making steady progress as per the set timeline.”
