Surrey teachers and support workers unite to demand better education conditions in BC.
Members of the Surrey Teachers Association (STA) and CUPE Local 728 are set to gather outside MLA Garry Begg’s office in Guildford on Monday afternoon to voice their concerns about ongoing contract negotiations with the provincial government.
The rally, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., aims to shed light on issues such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of support, and the struggle to recruit and retain qualified educators in Surrey schools.
STA President Amrit Sanghe emphasized the need for tangible investments to improve learning environments for students, stating, “Surrey students deserve better conditions in our schools.”
With B.C. teachers working without a contract since last summer, this demonstration follows the province’s ‘RedForBCEd’ day on Jan. 5, where supporters were encouraged to wear red in solidarity with educators.
The BC Teachers’ Federation has expressed frustration with the government’s response to their demands during collective bargaining, emphasizing the urgency for positive outcomes.
