“Union Speaks Out After Tragic Worker Death at Scarborough Community Centre Shakes Toronto”

A tragedy struck the Oakridge Community Recreation Centre in Scarborough when a City of Toronto recreation worker passed away during an incident on Wednesday morning. The worker, who was found unresponsive inside the facility, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the deceased employee has not been disclosed at this time. CityNews has made inquiries to the City of Toronto and Toronto police for further information on the matter.

In a statement released by CUPE Local 79, the union representing the city’s recreation staff, it was revealed that the employee had been working alone at the time of the incident. Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, the union extended heartfelt condolences to the worker’s loved ones and colleagues.

The statement highlighted concerns over the circumstances of the incident, emphasizing the importance of the City of Toronto’s Working Alone policy designed to provide immediate assistance to staff in emergencies. CUPE Local 79 pledged to collaborate with the city to ensure the policy’s enforcement and its effectiveness in safeguarding workers.

According to the Working Alone policy, departments are required to evaluate risks, establish communication protocols, and ensure prompt access to help for employees. The union raised significant doubts about whether these safety measures were adequately put in place, underscoring the necessity of prioritizing worker safety above all else.
