Firefighters in Surrey responded to two separate residential fires on Wednesday, keeping them busy throughout the day. The first incident occurred in the early afternoon, where a fire destroyed part of a townhouse on 121 Street near 64 Avenue. Three individuals were displaced, but luckily all occupants safely evacuated the premises before the fire crews arrived. Paramedics treated one person for smoke inhalation, and the damage was contained to a single unit, rendering it uninhabitable. A fundraising effort has been initiated to support the victims of this fire.
Later that night, another fire broke out in a three-level apartment building on 128 Street near 96 Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find smoke and flames on the ground floor of the building. Once again, the fire was contained to a single unit, and one person was treated by paramedics. The occupant of the affected unit was displaced as a result of the fire.
Both incidents are currently under investigation to determine the causes. Assistant Chief Geoff McIntyre highlighted that the city’s emergency social services offer short-term accommodations for fire victims in such situations. McIntyre refrained from speculating whether the two fires were connected.
