“Metrolinx CEO Confronts Frequent Finch West LRT Breakdowns: Pledges Major Improvements”

The Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) line, launched in early December, has been facing setbacks with frequent service interruptions, especially during snowfall events.

In an exclusive interview with 680 NewsRadio, Michael Lindsay, the President and CEO of Metrolinx, acknowledged the challenges and pointed towards a third-party contractor, Mosaic Transit Group, for insufficient snow and ice clearance on Line 6 tracks and switches.

Lindsay expressed dissatisfaction with Mosaic’s maintenance performance, emphasizing the need for improved protocols and subcontractor management to prevent snow-related stoppages.

Addressing the issues, Lindsay mentioned leveraging contractual measures, including financial penalties, to urge Mosaic for better maintenance practices.

Moreover, Lindsay highlighted collaboration efforts with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and the City of Toronto to enhance snow clearing processes along the line and prevent snow build-up issues.

Responding to questions about prior testing and resolution timelines, Lindsay admitted the testing phase was thorough but emphasized the need for continuous improvement moving forward.

Regarding the timeline for resolving Line 6 challenges, Lindsay assured ongoing efforts to address the issues promptly.

During the soft-launch phase from Dec. 7 to Dec. 31, 2025, the line encountered 350 delays, underscoring the need for effective solutions and operational improvements.
