“BC Restaurants Bet Big on FIFA World Cup to Revitalize Flagging Sales!”

Vancouver eateries are gearing up for patio season, with the city making it easier for businesses to offer outdoor seating. In anticipation of hosting FIFA World Cup matches, restaurant owners are hustling to secure permits for their patios before the season officially starts on Apr. 1.

The city has introduced a new initiative to simplify the permit process for ground-floor businesses looking to have storefront seating. This low-barrier option comes with no permit fee and expanded eligibility to include non-food businesses. With design guidelines available, businesses can easily plan and operate their outdoor seating areas while complying with city regulations.

Ian Tostenson, President, and CEO of the BC Restaurant and Food Services Association (BCRFA), highlights the significance of patios in maximizing the opportunities presented by hosting the global soccer tournament. He emphasizes that patios play a vital role in attracting customers and boosting sales, especially with the expected influx of tourists during the event.

Tostenson acknowledges the challenges faced by the industry, including a labor shortage affecting restaurant operations. Despite these hurdles, he remains optimistic about the potential for increased sales and business opportunities during the upcoming World Cup. To accommodate the anticipated demand, efforts are being made to extend liquor service hours and streamline approval processes to ensure a seamless experience for both locals and international visitors.
