Following a major snowstorm that hit Toronto on Sunday, the City of Toronto has launched a massive snow removal effort. City Manager Paul Johnson announced that after mobilizing hundreds of plows and personnel, the city is now focused on clearing the streets and sidewalks of accumulated snow.
Johnson explained the multi-phase approach to snow response, which includes pre-storm salting and brining, plowing during and after the storm, and now the crucial task of removing the piled-up snow. Priority areas like hospitals and TTC stops are already undergoing snow removal, with residential areas set to follow.
Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized the importance of residents preparing for the snow removal process by clearing their driveways and cars. Crews will be going street by street to notify residents of the snow removal schedule in their area.
Chow encouraged community support, urging residents to assist seniors and neighbors in need with shoveling and snow clearance. Parking enforcement on designated snow routes will be enforced to facilitate efficient snow removal operations.
In a bid to enhance snow removal capacity, the City of Toronto has secured an additional snow dump site in Etobicoke, bringing the total to six sites citywide. Upgrades to existing snow melters and the procurement of two new melters have also bolstered snow removal capabilities, aiming to address the challenges faced by the TTC in managing snow accumulation.
