“Citizen Minutes: Groundbreaking Documentary Series Ignites Civic Passion, Premieres in Montreal!”

Cinema Du Musée was filled with excitement on a Tuesday evening for the special Montreal premiere of the third season of ‘Citizen Minutes’. This short documentary series showcases six films united by a common theme: sharing the inspiring stories of everyday Canadians who are driving tangible change through civic engagement across the nation.

Jackie Garrow, the director of philanthropy and impact at Hot Docs, emphasized the transformative power of documentary films in sparking social change. “Documentaries are powerful tools to open minds, touch hearts, and foster important conversations within the community,” she explained.

Chrissan Hessing, co-director of the film ‘Crossing the Divide’, highlighted the significance of using personal stories to teach civic engagement outside of traditional classroom settings. By connecting individuals to relatable narratives from their communities, the impact can be profound and lasting.

The screening of ‘Citizen Minutes’ in Montreal delved into various key themes, including Indigenous education, LGBTQ2S+ representation, youth empowerment, and political depolarization. These themes were woven through the authentic voices of real people who are actively shaping positive changes in their neighborhoods.

Hot Docs intentionally chose to feature individuals from diverse backgrounds rather than high-profile figures, aiming to inspire viewers to see themselves as catalysts for change in their own communities, regardless of their roles.

One of the highlights of the event was Vladimir Chindea, a local filmmaker and director, showcasing his film ‘Homme-Relais’, which tells the story of Juan Manuel. Manuel emerged as a community leader by offering support to immigrant men, aiding them in navigating issues of identity loss and belonging in Quebec.

Looking ahead, Hot Docs has opened applications for a fourth season of ‘Citizen Minutes’, continuing their mission to spotlight mid-career filmmakers who tell stories of hope and positive transformation. Garrow expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming films, emphasizing the importance of sharing narratives that inspire unity and progress.
