Vancouver’s BC Place is considering opening its doors for public watch parties during days without FIFA matches, following the successful Whitecaps event. While the PNE Fairgrounds hosts an official fan fest, Mayor Ken Sim aims to extend the festivities to BC Place.
Tom Mayenknecht, host of The Sport Market on Sportsnet 650, supports the idea, highlighting the high ticket prices that hinder many from attending matches in person. Opening BC Place for watch parties could enhance the experience for both locals and tourists.
However, Mayenknecht acknowledges the need for careful planning and coordination, particularly in terms of staffing, logistics, and security concerns. Despite the challenges, he emphasizes the potential benefits of such initiatives for the community.
In a separate endeavor, Mayor Sim proposes a spectacular one-night-only fireworks display in Vancouver to make up for the canceled Celebration of Lights, with a budget of $2 million.
