Gasoline Price Analysis Reveals Montreal Motorists Paying High Prices Despite Province-Wide Drop
According to a recent report by CAA-Quebec, gasoline prices in Quebec saw a 5.8% decrease in 2025, mainly driven by lower crude oil and refined gasoline costs. Despite this overall drop, Montreal motorists still faced some of the highest prices in the province.
In 2025, Montreal recorded an average gasoline price of 158.3 cents per litre, slightly higher than neighboring Laval at 158.1 cents per litre. This was surprising given that Montreal, Laval, and Montérégie boasted the highest gasoline sales volumes per service station in Quebec, a factor that normally helps lower prices.
The report highlighted that in Montreal, retail markups decreased by only 1.2% last year, raising concerns about pricing practices. Montreal also faced the highest fuel tax burden among major Canadian cities, with taxes making up 33.4% of the price of a litre of regular gasoline in 2025.
Despite fluctuations throughout the year, with prices peaking at 169.9 cents per litre on Sept. 4 and hitting a low of 136.9 cents on Dec. 29 and 30, Montrealers continued to contend with high gasoline costs, impacting household budgets.
CAA-Quebec expressed surprise at the persistent high prices in Montreal despite strong sales volumes and pledged to monitor pricing trends in the region closely.
