Quebec’s Rollout of New French Curriculum in Schools Delayed by One Year
Quebec’s Education Minister Sonia LeBel has announced a one-year delay in the implementation of the province’s new French curriculum in elementary and secondary schools. The new program, originally planned to be introduced this year, will now be launched across the school network in September 2027.
The decision to postpone the rollout comes after criticism from employees in the education sector who felt that the original timeline was too rushed. The new curriculum underwent testing in 55 classrooms last September, prompting concerns about the need for more thorough preparation.
LeBel explained that the additional year will allow the Education Department to carefully analyze the results from the pilot projects and provide adequate training for school staff. The revised program places a significant emphasis on daily reading and writing, with a particular focus on Quebec culture. It also introduces interactive activities such as debates and role-playing exercises to enhance student engagement.
Furthermore, the new curriculum includes updated vocabulary requirements and mandates cultural outings for students to enrich their learning experience.
