Montreal Plans Major Job Cuts: 1,000 Positions Slated for Elimination by 2027

Montreal Mayor Plans to Streamline City Operations for Better Service

Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada is embarking on a significant initiative to enhance service delivery in Montreal by restructuring the city’s civil service. The administration aims to eliminate 1,000 positions over the next four years, with a focus on efficiency and cost savings to benefit residents.

Emphasizing the need for a more agile and responsive city government, Mayor Martinez Ferrada stated, “We want to simplify processes, enhance efficiency, and ultimately save resources for the betterment of our citizens.” She assured that this move is not a reflection of the dedication and hard work of city employees but a strategic decision to improve operations.

The restructuring plan is projected to result in a substantial cost reduction of $16 million by 2026. Key measures include a comprehensive review of the city’s organization, structure, staffing levels, and expenditures to optimize resources effectively.

Initiating the reform process, the administration has already implemented a freeze on hiring for certain positions and management roles. This strategic move is part of the mayor’s commitment to bridge the gap between taxpayers and the quality of services provided, aiming to ensure that Montrealers receive value for their contributions.
