Advocate Slams B.C. Budget for Ignoring Climate Action, Demands Greater Commitment

A prominent climate advocacy group expresses deep concern over the absence of new funding dedicated to climate action in British Columbia’s 2026 budget.

According to the Sierra Club BC, the budget’s focus on industries is alarming as it seems to come at the expense of environmental protection and nature conservation.

Jens Wieting, a senior policy and science advisor at the organization, highlights the troubling aspect of the budget being influenced by tariff threats from the United States. He emphasizes the importance of upholding international commitments and safeguarding nature for future generations.

The budget continues to prioritize resource extraction, mining, and fossil fuels, neglecting conservation efforts and sustainability measures, such as the protection of old-growth forests.

Wieting criticizes the lack of financial details regarding conservation progress and urges the government to fulfill its promise of doubling conservation efforts to 30% by 2030, a commitment made back in 2023.

Furthermore, the absence of new funding for the CleanBC plan in the budget is concerning, especially after the plan’s review last fall highlighted the need for investments in clean energy solutions like heat pumps and electric vehicles (EVs).

The Sierra Club BC stresses the importance of redirecting funding from harmful industries towards a more diverse and sustainable economy in British Columbia. It underlines the urgency of embracing renewable energy sources and climate solutions to reduce emissions and protect vulnerable ecosystems.
