Mary Gardner Elementary in Châteauguay is abuzz with Kindness Week, led not by teachers, but by a remarkable group of Grade 3 and 4 girls called The Sparkle Club.
Throughout this special week, these young leaders are diving into important themes like inclusion, respect, and anti-bullying efforts. But they’re not just talking the talk; they’re walking the walk, demonstrating kindness and inspiring their peers to do the same.
“I complimented someone’s outfit!” one Sparkle Club member shared excitedly.
Another chimed in, “I helped pick up things for people who dropped them!”
Founded by Latoya Belfon, affectionately known as ‘Mrs. B’ to the students, alongside special education aides Miss Bonnie and Miss Linda, The Sparkle Club has grown to include over 25 students. They gather for lunchtime meetings every fifth day to learn about positive social choices and how they can play a part in creating a better, safer world.
Belfon emphasized the importance of teaching the girls about fostering healthy friendships, boosting confidence, and exuding positivity. “We guide them on how to walk, talk, be bold, be brave — always sparkle!” she expressed.
She stressed the significance of instilling a culture of kindness and responsibility among the students, not only within the club but throughout the entire school.
The children eagerly embrace Sparkle Day, marked by wearing pink and purple attire as their signature uniform. They are committed to spreading joy and kindness, evident in their vibrant displays and motivational stickers that uplift and inspire their peers with messages like “you matter.”
Principal Megan Martin notes the overwhelming enthusiasm and positive impact The Sparkle Club has had on the school community. Lunch meetings have been packed, with up to 50 students eagerly participating in spreading kindness.
The ultimate goal, as emphasized by Belfon, is to nurture a generation of empathetic and inclusive individuals who will carry these values forward into adulthood, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the school walls.
