Fire Ignited by Lawn Mower Engulfs Osoyoos Home in Flames

A home on the outskirts of Osoyoos was destroyed by a grass fire Thursday, Mounties say.

It’s believed it started from a spark from a lawn mower and quickly erupted into a full-on blaze.

“Early indication is that the homeowner was mowing their lawn when the grass surrounding the house caught fire and unfortunately spread to the garage and then further to the house and some vehicles as well,” said Sgt. Jason Bayda.

He says the fire started around 3 p.m. Thursday at the home, which is located on a rural property within Osoyoos Indian Band territory.

“There’s a subdivision that’s a couple 100 metres away, so obviously, in warm weather like this, fire can spread very quickly, but fire crews that are on scene right now have done a tremendous job to knock it down very quickly,” Bayda said Thursday afternoon.

He says thanks to the quick work of both the Osoyoos and Oliver fire departments and crews from the BC Wildfire Service, no other homes were affected.

The temperatures were expected to be in the low 30s in Osoyoos today, which is not unusual for that part of the Okanagan. The fire danger risk for the area is listed as high, but it’s considered extreme just to the southwest of the town.
