The province is taking action to prevent drivers in the Fraser Valley from striking an overpass.
Construction began Monday, with crews installing an overheight-detection system (OHDS) at the No. 3 Road overpass along Highway 1 near Chilliwack.
The province says the site was chosen because it’s been hit six times since 2021, causing “costly repairs and major traffic delays.”
“Overheight collisions are entirely preventable,” said Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth
“This new system will help ensure overheight commercial drivers get advanced warning before reaching the overpass. By combining proven detection tools with stronger enforcement methods, we are taking action to reduce the number of strikes and keep people and goods moving safely.”

The detection system will feature sensors and flashing beacons to warn oncoming drivers of the height.
The province says the OHDS is part of an ongoing effort to improve highway safety.
Three overpass strikes have been recorded on B.C. highways this year. Seventeen were recorded in 2025.
