Political science lecturer says calls for resignation of MLA Chan hold water

A political analyst says calls for the resignation of Independent MLA Hon Chan hold water.

The MLA faces charges of assault, assault by choking and uttering threats, and both the B.C. NDP and the B.C. Greens have called for his resignation.

UBC political science lecturer Stewart Prest says Chan’s case raises the question of whether shame still exists in politics.

While everybody is entitled to a “robust defence when accused of a serious crime,” it does not mean that Chan will able to mount that defence while remaining MLA, Prest says.

Chan disagrees with the allegations dating back to Jan. 12, 2024, and plans to defend himself through the court system.

B.C. Conservatives kicked Chan out of their caucus after first learning of the charges Wednesday and interim leader Trevor Halford says it is up to Chan to decide whether to resign.
