Wednesday marked the first of more than a year of planned overnight lane closures on New Westminster’s Queensborough Bridge.
The B.C. Ministry of Transportation says drivers should plan ahead as crews begin a bridge deck renewal project expected to last through fall 2027.
“During the nighttime closure windows, traffic will flow one lane in each direction over the bridge,” the ministry explained.
On weekdays, that means the reductions will start at 9:30 p.m. and end the following morning at 5 a.m.
On weekends, the reductions will end the following morning at 9 a.m.
“As work is weather-dependent, timelines may shift.”
The ministry says oversized vehicle drivers are urged to take alternate routes during those hours, as the closures will reduce the bridge to only 3.5 metres in each direction.
“Oversized vehicles exceeding those widths will be stopped and may need to wait an extended time to cross,” it added.
The overnight lane closures will pause for the winter in November, the ministry says, and continue in March 2027.
Pedestrian access to the Queensborough Bridge will be unaffected for the whole construction period.
