Montreal REM outage forces late-night evacuation through tunnel

A power failure on the REM network overnight April 11 forced a service shutdown and led to a late-night evacuation of passengers between stations.

Service was interrupted between Brossard and Édouard-Montpetit stations due to the outage, halting trains until the end of service. A reduced line remained in operation between Côte-de-Liesse and Deux-Montagnes, with service extended until 2 a.m. to help affected passengers reach their destinations.

Shortly before 1 a.m., a train stopped between McGill and Édouard-Montpetit stations could not be moved, triggering an evacuation procedure. Passengers were escorted through the tunnel by emergency responders and exited safely at Édouard-Montpetit station.

Officials say a backup plan was activated after about 20 minutes, as per protocol, and staff assisted riders during the disruption. However, the evacuation extended beyond metro operating hours, limiting alternative transit options for some passengers.

REM officials say procedures will be reviewed with partners following the incident. A protocol for passengers with reduced mobility, including the use of paratransit services, is in place when required.

No injuries were reported.
