A championship run built on grit, endurance, and a roster that refused to break through exhaustion has ended in history for Montreal’s LaSalle Community Comprehensive High School.
The LCCHS Wolves cadet girls’ basketball team captured the RSEQ Provincial Championship over the weekend in Drummondville, winning the first provincial title in school history after a demanding four-game run against Quebec’s top-ranked programs.
Entering the tournament as the ninth seed out of 16, the Wolves were not considered favourites.
As a public school team from the Lester B. Pearson School Board representing the GMAA, they told CityNews they also faced structural disadvantages compared to larger programs with deeper benches and dedicated athletic budgets.
The team travelled with just eight players.
With four games in 48 hours, those athletes were pushed to their physical and mental limits, facing schools that routinely rotated 12 to 15 players. Still, the Wolves outworked every opponent to complete an undefeated run.
LCCHS opened the tournament with a commanding 74–24 win over La Concorde, immediately establishing intensity on both ends of the floor.
They followed with a tighter 43–32 quarter-final victory over St-Patrick’s HS, before taking control in the semi-final with a 69–41 win against Fernand-Lefebvre.
That set up a championship matchup against LSL-Altitude.
In the gold medal game, LCCHS held off a determined Altitude squad for a 50–44 victory, sealing the provincial title.
The win marks a major milestone for the school and the LaSalle community, ending a decades-long wait for a provincial basketball championship.
The victory is being celebrated as a breakthrough moment for LCCHS athletics, coming more than 50 years in the making for a provincial basketball title.
It also highlights a team that overcame limited resources, a short bench, and a grueling schedule to reach the top of Quebec high school basketball.
The LCCHS Wolves provincial championship roster includes:
Janasia Mahomes-Gibbs (#1), Avery Devlin (#2), Michelle Gayle (#3), Karly McGuire (#4), Dahlia Berridge (#5), Kalista Bailey (#6), Zariiah Deroche-Geddes (#7), Rowan Devlin (#12), Jennah Thompson-Rose (#13), Jaya Johnson (#8), Zoe Lightburn (#9), Reemna Hagos (#10), and Teagan Monaghan (#11).
(Players marked with an asterisk were part of the season but did not attend provincials.)
Following their historic win, the program is now focused on sustaining its momentum and ensuring athletes have access to better resources moving forward, including equipment and scouting opportunities to help them transition to CEGEP and university basketball.
