Mounties say a Vancouver man has been fined and had his vehicle impounded after he was pulled over in Maple Ridge, allegedly speeding while impaired and with his children in the car.
On Sunday, a Maple Ridge RCMP officer was enforcing speed limits on Lougheed Highway near River Road when the driver of a white Tesla sped past.
“A laser reader clocked the Tesla driving 191km/h in a posted 80km/h zone (111km/h over the speed limit),” said a police statement Wednesday.
When the RCMP stopped the driver, a 37-year-old man, he was subjected to a roadside screening device test.
“The driver failed the ASD test, meaning his blood alcohol concentration was greater than 100 mg%.”
The officer served the driver a $438 ticket for speeding, impounded his vehicle at his expense, and issued a 90-day driving prohibition.
The RCMP says it also made contact with the provincial Ministry of Children and Family Development about the safety of his children.
“In situations like this, RoadSafetyBC can impose further driving sanctions such as an Ignition Interlock Device being installed in the vehicle and/or completion of the Responsible Driver Program. “
Police say the driver claimed to have been taking his kids home from their activities.
“Instead, his family had to find an alternative way home and got to see first-hand the consequences of excessive speeding and impaired driving. We’re thankful that things didn’t turn out worse than they did,” said Sgt. Joe Whalley.
