Burnaby home-invasion killer sentenced

The second of four perpetrators in a Burnaby home-invasion murder from 2023 has been sentenced in the death of 19-year-old Ryan Nagy.

Rais Muksal Usman, 22, who plead guilty to manslaughter in October 2025, has been sentenced to six years incarceration, less credit for time served.

Including the time already served, the sentence will have Usman incarcerated for three years and 211 days.

On June 29, 2023, the then 19-year-old, Usman, along with three other individuals participated in a violent home-invasion at the Nagy residence in Burnaby.

The group intended to steal firearms stored in a gun safe in the basement of the house that belonged to Nagy’s father. The plan was to threaten Nagy and force him to open the lock.

The four arrived at the Nagy residence together, wearing dark clothes and balaclavas. They carried knives, duct tape, and zip ties with them.

Usman carried a knife.

The four entered the residence and the three other intruders went into Nagy’s bedroom where he was asleep with his girlfriend. Usman did not enter the bedroom.

While in the bedroom, a struggle broke out between Nagy, his girlfriend and the intruders. Nagy and his girlfriend were bound with duct tape and zip ties. They took the two out of the bedroom and downstairs to the basement where the gun safe was. By the time they arrived there, Nagy was unconscious.

Nagy’s father, Michael, returned to the residence soon after the break-in and saw two of the intruders at the bottom of the stairs. One was Usman.

A struggle ensued and Usman’s balaclava came off and he dropped both his sunglasses and the knife he had brought with him. Usman left both items behind when the group fled the scene.

Usman later burned the clothes he wore during the break-in in an attempt to avoid being identified and caught by the police.

All four intruders fled the scene. They were arrested and charged more than a year later.

The court heard 22 victim impact statements in regard to the loss of Nagy, with the statement made by his mother sitting with the judge especially.

Justice Majawa stated in his sentencing decision that the loss of Nagy was “incalculable.”

In March, the first of the four intruders was sentenced.

Ali Shamkhi, 22, was sentenced to eight years for the charge of manslaughter, two and a half years for the possession of a prohibited weapon and one year for carrying a concealed weapon, to be served consecutively. All together, a total of 10 and a half years.

Shamkhi was also credited with time served, 930 days, about two and a half years.

The last two home invaders, Ousmane Keita and Rhoda Mboka Diabikulu, have also pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Their sentencing hearings are scheduled to be held on June 10 and 11, respectively.
