Richmond Crackdown: Illegal Ride-Share Operator Convicted and Hit with Massive Fine, RCMP Reports

Mounties in Richmond are boasting about successfully shutting down another illegal ride-sharing operation.

The Richmond RCMP says the operator of an unlicensed ride-hailing service pleaded guilty in early July.

A release Thursday says it’s the third such conviction in four months.

“This particular operator was also a fourth-time illegal ride-hail offender,” police added.

Mounties are not divulging the name of the operator, but say the man has been fined, penalized, and sentenced to one year of probation under the condition that he doesn’t operate a commercial passenger vehicle unless properly licensed.

“It is clear the courts are taking illegal ride-hailing very seriously, in addition to the heavy fines and penalties upon conviction,” said Const. Frank Tarape with the Road Safety Unit.
