“Mpox on the Rise: Quebec Confronts Sudden Spike with Six New Cases, Public Health Issues Alert”

Six new cases of mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, have been identified in Quebec in the past two weeks.

Montreal’s regional public health department is calling for caution, as four of these cases are believed to have been acquired locally in the city.

The other two were acquired abroad.

This brings the total number of cases in Quebec to nine so far in 2025.

Montreal’s regional public health department recommends people get vaccinated, reminding everyone that you can still contract mpox despite the vaccine, but that the symptoms will be far less serious.

In 2024, there were 38 cases of mpox in the province compared to 11 in 2023. The largest outbreak occurred in 2022, when the first cases appeared in Quebec, when there were 400.

Mpox is mainly transmitted through skin-to-skin contact or through mucous membranes or body fluids.
