Four people have been arrested as part of a major fraud investigation involving more than $4.5 million in alleged losses, according to Montreal police (SPVM).
The investigation, launched in 2023 by the SPVM’s Economic Crimes Section, focuses on roughly 20 incidents involving alleged real estate fraud and vehicle rental scams.
Police say the suspects were arrested Wednesday morning in Montreal and Quebec City under warrants issued as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities allege the group targeted financially vulnerable homeowners across multiple municipalities, including Longueuil, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Sorel, and other regions, using online ads offering debt relief solutions. Victims were reportedly brought to a notary and unknowingly signed over property documents.
One of the suspects is also accused of involvement in vehicle rental fraud involving stolen identities and lease agreements linked to a dealership in the Montérégie region.
Charges include fraud over $5,000, conspiracy, and use of forged documents. One suspect is expected to appear in court, while three others were released under conditions pending future proceedings.
Police are reminding the public to remain cautious of unsolicited financial offers and to carefully verify any documents before signing.
