Montreal, southern Quebec facing extreme heat

Several regions of Quebec, including Montreal, are facing an extreme heat episode on July 1. And this is just the beginning.

Hot and humid weather is expected until Friday in many parts of the province, particularly in the south.

Wednesday in Montreal is expected to reach 32 Celsius, during the day, before dropping to 24 C overnight. Thursday is expected to reach 32 C again, before dropping to 23 C overnight. Then Friday is expected to reach 32 C.

In some places, the temperature could even reach 44 with the humidex factor, according to Environment Canada.

“The mass of hot and humid air that is coming to settle over the province will bring temperatures that could be around 30 to 33 degrees, especially in the south of the province. With a lot of humidity in the air, we will have temperatures felt around 40, maybe even up to 43 in some areas,” reports meteorologist Félix Biron.

He added that “the weather will be quite warm and sticky on Wednesday and Thursday, potentially also until Friday for most areas of the province.”

Rain, however, could offer a respite. “When a downpour falls, evaporation cools the atmosphere a little, so depending on what time of day it falls, it may reduce the forecast temperature locally, in some places, but in general, most areas should still have temperatures around 30 degrees and more for at least a few days,” says Biron.

This warm, humid air mass will not only raise the mercury, but it will also most likely cause thunderstorms. Biron points out that conditions are favourable throughout the province.

“A lot of heat and a lot of humidity are essential ingredients for good thunderstorms, so this will be something to watch out for when planning the day’s activities,” he warns.
