“Mount Pleasant Transformation: Vancouver Injects $1 Million for Neighborhood Revitalization!”

The City of Vancouver says it’s investing $1 million to “uplift” street-level infrastructure in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

Mayor Ken Sim and city councillors gathered in the plaza at the intersection of Main Street and East 14th Avenue Wednesday to announce an initiative for local improvements, including sidewalk repairs, street cleaning, lighting upgrades, new bike racks, garbage bin upgrades, and more.

Mount Pleasant is the second neighbourhood to benefit from the $6 million ‘Uplifting Communities Fund,’ approved last year.

In March, Sim announced a $5.2 million investment aimed at upgrading public spaces in the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood.

“This is a neighbourhood with deep roots in creativity, small business and community, and it deserves public spaces that reflect that spirit, invite people in and bring people together,” Sim told media of Mount Pleasant Wednesday.

He says the city has also invested $400,000 to reconstruct the neighbourhood plaza at that intersection.

“What started as a temporary pop-up will soon become a purpose-built, long-term gathering space for this community.”

Construction will begin in September and is expected to conclude in spring next year.

Permanent, vehicle-free plazas are currently under construction throughout the city, Sim says.
