TTC Embarks on Game-Changing Upgrade for Line 2: New Signal System to Slash Commuter Delays

Toronto’s Line 2 Bloor–Danforth is gearing up for a major transformation as the TTC has awarded Hitachi Rail Canada a contract to install a new cutting-edge Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) system. This significant upgrade is expected to enhance capacity, reduce delays, and cater to the city’s expanding population.

The modernization project, unveiled recently, signifies a crucial step in the TTC’s extensive strategy to revamp Line 2’s outdated infrastructure and get it ready for a new set of subway trains set to arrive in the near future.

CBTC, also known as Automatic Train Control (ATC), has already proven its worth on Line 1 by enhancing reliability and minimizing signal-related issues.

The renovation work on Line 2 will kick off this year, with design and engineering activities scheduled to run until 2028. The installation process will be carried out in stages to lessen service interruptions, and the entire project is slated for completion by 2037.

The CBTC system will automatically regulate train speed and spacing, enabling the TTC to closely monitor train positions with enhanced accuracy. This precision will allow trains to operate at closer intervals, thereby reducing wait times and increasing the number of trains that can run per hour.

TTC authorities are optimistic that this upgrade will lead to more frequent service, fewer signal-related disruptions, and a more robust subway network connecting Etobicoke, downtown, and Scarborough.

Mayor Olivia Chow highlighted, “We are committed to improving public transit in Toronto by making it faster and more efficient for all commuters. By modernizing Line 2, we aim to provide a more dependable and frequent service, while also creating job opportunities for the local community.”

TTC Chair Jamaal Myers emphasized the importance of this investment for a line serving hundreds of thousands of riders daily. “The introduction of CBTC, along with the upcoming new subway trains on Line 2, will ensure that the TTC can continue delivering safe, reliable, and efficient services for years to come.”
