Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s administration is moving to scrap a regulation that permits provincial parliament members residing in or near Toronto to charge hotel accommodations in the city to their expenses.
The decision follows backlash aimed at Tourism, Culture and Gaming Minister Stan Cho earlier this week from opposition groups, criticizing him for claiming over $16,000 in Toronto hotel expenses since 2023 while representing the Willowdale constituency in north Toronto.
Cho has pledged to refund the entire amount, despite the fact that his expenses were deemed valid for special circumstances as per the legislature’s regulations.
According to the legislature’s official website, instances like severe snowstorms are considered appropriate reasons for members residing within 50 kilometers of Queen’s Park to claim such expenses.
In a recent development, Government House Leader Steve Clark has communicated with the Speaker, expressing his intention to abolish the special circumstances provision.
He is seeking approval from the opposition parties regarding this decision.
