“High Alert on Highways: SQ Ramps Up Patrols as Construction Holiday Traffic Risks Rise”

As Quebec’s Annual Construction Holiday kicks off this weekend, roads are expected to be bustling with travelers as a large portion of the province takes a break for the next two weeks. Unfortunately, this period also tends to see an increase in road accidents, making it one of the deadliest times of the year on Quebec’s highways.

Last year alone, there were 38 fatalities in 30 collisions on roads monitored by the Sûreté du Québec during the construction holiday. In response to this concerning trend, the provincial police force has announced heightened patrols statewide until August 2, focusing on enforcing traffic laws to reduce fatal accidents caused by factors like speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt negligence.

Joyce Kemp, a lieutenant at the Sûreté du Québec’s communications department, emphasized the importance of addressing common causes of car accidents during this period, including speeding, driving under the influence, distraction, and seatbelt non-compliance.

Road safety advocates like André Durocher from the CAA-Québec Foundation for Road Safety stress the importance of relaxation during vacations to prevent accidents. Durocher highlighted various factors contributing to the heightened danger on Quebec roads during this holiday period, such as fatigue, alcohol consumption, increased traffic volume, and inexperienced drivers towing trailers or campers.

Moreover, with more Quebecers choosing to vacation within the province rather than traveling abroad, the roads are busier than ever. The Sûreté du Québec underscores that most fatal collisions are avoidable and urges all motorists to exercise caution, patience, and focus while driving to improve road safety records.

While many construction workers are excited about the break to unwind and spend time with loved ones, not everyone will be taking time off during the holiday. Some, like Gabriel Plamondon, are working through the period, while others, like Laurina Desharnais, have plans to travel and relax with family. Meanwhile, individuals like Robyn Jaquays are gearing up for major life changes, and Towfik Mohammed is balancing work with weekend family visits.
