“Justice Served: Five-Year Sentencing in 2018 Downtown Eastside Stabbing Case”

A man will be spending three years behind bars after time served for a deadly stabbing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside in 2018.

The Vancouver Police Department reported Wednesday that 39-year-old Benny Rae Armstrong pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the incident.

Armstrong received a five-year, minus time served, prison sentence last week.

The stabbing occurred on June 23, 2018, near West Hastings Street and Abbott Street.

The victim, 26-year-old Abeal Negussie Abera, died from his injuries a week later in the hospital.

Armstrong was arrested in March 2024 and has already spent time in custody before his sentencing.

As a result, he will serve an additional three years in prison to complete his sentence.

In addition to his prison term, Armstrong has also been issued a 10-year prohibition on firearm possession.
