The Quebec Police Seek Assistance from the Military for Suspected Grenade Found in Campground
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) has enlisted the help of the Canadian Armed Forces to address a concerning discovery at a campground in Montérégie. A person stumbled upon a suspected grenade on Tuesday morning at Lac Cristal campground in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, prompting swift action from authorities.
According to SQ spokesperson Louis-Philippe Ruel, the individual found the object unexpectedly while cleaning the area. Although there was no immediate threat posed, the nature of the find raised alarm bells due to its resemblance to a grenade of vintage origin, although its authenticity remained unconfirmed by the police.
As a precautionary measure, a security perimeter has been put in place around the campsite, restricting access for both entry and exit. The Canadian Armed Forces have dispatched a specialized team to the scene to handle the situation.
Abygail Bourgault-Lévesque, a representative of the military, outlined the procedure involved in assessing and neutralizing the suspected munition. Depending on its condition, the object may be safely transported for disposal at a military base or undergo controlled destruction on-site if deemed hazardous.
While the specifics of the object were not disclosed, Bourgault-Lévesque emphasized the importance of reporting any potentially dangerous military items to authorities and refraining from handling them until assessed by experts.
