Santé Québec buys land for $30M for Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital expansion

Santé Québec announced Friday that it had acquired the land needed to carry out the project for the new Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital in Montreal at a cost of $30 million.

The provincial health authority purchased the land, which previously belonged to the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Foundation. The foundation has committed to reinvesting the funds received from Santé Québec into the expansion and modernization project.

According to Santé Québec, the acquisition of the land represents “a key step toward moving forward with the construction of a modern hospital that meets the needs of the population in eastern Montreal.”

“Thanks to the close collaboration between Santé Québec’s teams and the exceptional commitment of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Foundation, we can now move forward with implementing the selected design for the expansion and modernization of this essential infrastructure for the residents of East Montreal and Quebec,” said its president and CEO, Geneviève Biron, in a press release.

Shortly after taking office, Premier Christine Fréchette announced an investment of more than $700 million in the Maisonneuve-Rosemont expansion and modernization project.

Ultimately, the plan is to develop a complex comprising 720 single-room inpatient and intensive care beds and 26 neonatal beds, operating rooms and related areas, a medical imaging unit, as well as laboratories and an animal facility for research.

The CAQ government has faced widespread criticism regarding the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital due to its severely outdated condition and the slow pace of construction.

Cost estimates for the entire project currently stand at around $5 billion. The goal is to admit the first patients in 2036.
