If you’ve lived in Vancouver long enough – you may have come across ‘The Styrogirls.’
“We sort of just wanted to colour the city a little bit, it’s basically just a great way to meet fellow Vancouverites.”
Sorrel and Tarrin McDonough have curated a vast collection of Styrofoam creations from artists like Taylor Swift, Gimli from Lord of the Rings, and popular comic book characters like Deadpool.
Now Tarrin is taking on a personal challenge to raise money for cancer research.
“I came upon the idea of doing one million steps in the month of August walking challenge, which will go towards BC Cancer.”
Tarrin will be walking roughly 32 thousand steps per day with the goal of raising $5000.
“Everyone is affected by cancer, I was sitting with a group of people, and I realized of the eight women I was sitting with six of them were cancer survivors, so it was a bit of a wakeup call for me.”
Just over halfway through her challenge – Tarrin has already raised over $3000 and on the last day of August, the Styrogirls will suit up for one last walk in a Styrofoam figure of a late Canadian Icon.
“We decided to paint our Lego figure into Moira, as an homage to Catherine O’Hara, who died from complications due to cancer.”
The sisters say the tribute is also a reminder of the impact cancer has had on so many families — and a way to turn each step into something meaningful.
