The effects of overnight lightning storms continue to be felt at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), with dozens of flights cancelled or delayed Sunday.
Lightning in the area forced YVR to pause operations for safety between approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:55 a.m. Sunday.
Megan Sutton, YVR’s senior communications specialist, said departing flights were unable to leave the airport and arriving aircraft could not taxi to their gates, leaving some passengers stranded on planes for hours.
Although weather conditions improved Sunday, flight disruptions persisted.
“As the weather has improved, some flights continue to be impacted today at YVR,” Sutton said. “We are working closely with our airline partners to support recovery of their schedule and get passengers on their way as quickly as possible.”
As of Sunday, more than 50 flights had been cancelled and at least 53 others were delayed, according to YVR.
Airport officials are advising travellers scheduled to fly Sunday to check their flight status before heading to the airport.
