Bruce Banman, MLA for Abbotsford South, has decided to step away from the BC Conservatives and will now represent his constituency as an Independent in the provincial legislature. This move comes as the sixth MLA to leave the party’s caucus this month under the leadership of Kerry-Lynne Findlay.
In a recent statement, Banman shared that conversations with his constituents post-leadership race played a significant role in his decision. He expressed concerns about the shrinking support base needed to challenge the current ruling party, emphasizing the importance of unity and focusing on the needs of the people over political divides.
Moreover, Banman highlighted the doubts surrounding Findlay’s leadership capabilities, stating that many constituents are skeptical about her electability. Joining the ranks of other former Conservative MLAs who have transitioned to Independent status, Banman stressed the necessity for all MLAs to prioritize the interests of the public above partisan lines.
By departing from the BC Conservative caucus, Banman not only adds to the growing number of Independent MLAs but also underscores the ongoing internal shifts within the party since the new leadership took over.
