Across the English Montreal School Board, a buzz of excitement filled the air as thousands of students embarked on their first day back at school. From reuniting with old friends to making new ones and meeting teachers, it was a day of fresh beginnings and big milestones.
The EMSB saw a total of 33 elementary schools and 15 high schools open their doors to over 17,000 eager students for the 2026-27 academic year. At Merton Elementary School in Côte Saint-Luc, young William Winkler, aged five, took his first steps into kindergarten, marking a significant moment for him and his family.
Reflecting on her son’s transition, Megan Daoust, William’s mother, shared a mix of emotions, describing the experience as bittersweet and a poignant reminder of how quickly children grow up. Excitement filled the air as William’s father, Eddie Winkler, marveled at his son’s growth, expressing pride and a touch of nostalgia.
Kindergarteners under the EMSB’s care enjoyed a gentle introduction to school life, with two-hour sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday before transitioning to full-day classes on Sept. 3. This gradual approach aims to help young learners acclimate to their new environment, connect with teachers, and establish a routine.
For William and his peers, Sept. 1 marked the beginning of a fresh chapter brimming with opportunities for learning, forging friendships, and creating lasting memories as they embarked on a new school year.
