Montreal is facing a challenging traffic situation with multiple factors contributing to congestion on the city’s roads this September. With 42 major construction sites ongoing, the return of many residents to school and work, and the hosting of two significant cycling events, drivers are bracing for a tough month ahead.
Traffic expert Rick Leckner highlighted that September traditionally poses the highest congestion levels due to the end of summer holidays and the resumption of normal routines. According to Transport Québec, while the number of construction sites is consistent with previous years, this September is further complicated by the UCI Road World Championships.
Transport Québec spokesperson Sarah Bensadoun advised the public about upcoming road closures, including the complete shutdown of Highway 10 towards downtown Montreal from September 19 to 22, and the closure of the Champlain Bridge towards Montreal on September 26 and 27 mornings. Additionally, a stretch of Park Avenue will be closed from September 4 to October 4 for the cycling races’ conclusion.
To mitigate the impact on commuters, Transport Québec recommends utilizing real-time information sources like Quebec 511 and electronic highway signs, as well as checking the cycling championship’s website for interactive maps with race updates. Carpooling and public transit usage are also encouraged by experts to alleviate traffic congestion.
Despite the challenges, Montreal residents are resigned to the situation, with some expressing frustration at the increased traffic volumes but acknowledging the need to adapt to the circumstances.
