A suspect has been arrested and another is being sought by Toronto police following a disturbing incident where multiple vehicles were set on fire at the home of Member of Parliament (MP) Salma Zahid in Scarborough.
The destructive act occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 27, in the Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East area. Surveillance footage captured a figure dressed in black pouring an accelerant on the hoods of five cars parked in the driveway, igniting some of them.
Fortunately, only three vehicles sustained damage as a result of the arson attack.
Roshvin Crofton, a 24-year-old individual, was apprehended on Sunday, August 30, and has been charged with various offenses, including arson causing property damage and possession of incendiary materials. Authorities are actively seeking a second suspect linked to the incident and are requesting information regarding a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata’s whereabouts prior to the arson.
MP Zahid confirmed the incident, reassuring the public that her family and property were unharmed. She declined to speculate on a possible motive, emphasizing the importance of awaiting the investigation’s conclusions.
Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the act as a “cowardly act of violence,” while Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed relief over the absence of injuries and commended the swift response of emergency services.
