A new program in Montreal North is making a splash by introducing local youth to the world of competitive swimming.
Mary-Sophie Harvey, a renowned Quebec swimmer with an impressive Olympic career, has shifted her focus to nurturing the next generation of swimmers in her community. Inspired by her own humble beginnings, Harvey is determined to provide opportunities for youngsters to pursue their swimming dreams.
After representing Canada in the Olympics, Harvey has turned her attention to coaching in Montreal North as a way of giving back. She believes in the power of sports to transform lives and wants to share her passion for swimming with the young generation.
Assisting the Montreal North swim team, Catherine Turcotte emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and community engagement in the program. By offering a chance for new Canadians to explore a new sport and develop essential skills, the initiative aims to create a lasting impact on the participants.
Harvey, alongside local coaches, is actively involved in guiding the youth from diverse backgrounds through the fundamentals of competitive swimming. The program focuses on providing a supportive environment where children can learn different strokes, drills, and receive personalized assessments to enhance their swimming abilities.
Turcotte mentions the overwhelming response from the community towards the program, indicating a genuine interest in promoting aquatic sports among the youth. Evaluations are underway to select candidates who show potential and dedication to continue their swimming journey through the program.
In addition to practical swimming lessons and assessments, the Starting Line initiative is committed to offering financial aid to ten deserving youth to help cover the costs associated with competitive swimming. This support aims to make the sport more accessible and inclusive, opening doors for families to engage in a vibrant sporting community.
