A recent survey commissioned exclusively for Rogers OMNI TV reveals that a significant 72 percent of Vancouver residents feel disconnected from their mayor and city council, believing that they are not in tune with the community’s desires and requirements.
When presented with a selection of 19 key issues, respondents were asked to identify the most pressing concerns facing the city.
The survey, conducted by Canada Pulse Insights, highlights that the top priority for Vancouverites is affordability and the cost of living, with 45 percent of respondents emphasizing its importance. Following closely behind is housing affordability and home ownership at 33 percent, with crime, policing, and public safety ranking at 29 percent. Health care and access to care were deemed crucial by 25 percent of participants, while drug use, the opioid crisis, and supervised consumption sites garnered a concern level of 24 percent.
John Wright, CEO of Canada Pulse Insights, noted that while local officials may not be able to solve the overarching affordability challenge, they can address its symptoms by concentrating on affordable housing, tax freezes, and ensuring investments yield tangible benefits for residents.
Affordability and the cost of living emerged as the top priority for both supporters of Pete Fry (39 percent) and Ken Sim (50 percent), although variations were observed in their other areas of focus.
Fry backers exhibited heightened concerns regarding climate change, accountability in city hall, parks and recreation, and municipal service quality. On the other hand, Sim supporters expressed particular worries about crime, municipal finances, and traffic congestion.
The survey uncovered a prevailing sentiment among respondents who back candidates other than Sim, with a notable 81 percent of Fry supporters feeling that the mayor and city council are out of touch with the community’s needs. Similarly, supporters of Kareen Allam and Colleen Hardwick shared this sentiment at 80 and 83 percent, respectively.
Sim supporters, while largely in alignment with their concerns, also acknowledged a disconnect between the local leadership and the city’s residents, with 44 percent expressing this viewpoint.
