“Massive Ontario Boreal Forest, Exceeding Size of Toronto, Granted Protection from Future Development”

Amid Efforts to Protect Nature, Ontario’s Vast Boreal Forest Secured

Stretching over 814 square kilometers, a portion of Ontario’s northern boreal forest, exceeding the size of Toronto, has been safeguarded from industrial development. The Nature Conservancy of Canada proudly announces its acquisition of this vast expanse of boreal forest and peatlands south of Kapuskasing, previously under the ownership of a company engaged in carbon offset credit sales.

This non-profit organization assures that in areas where the landscape remains untouched and vulnerable species are protected, certain day-use recreational activities like hiking and paddling may continue, in compliance with provincial regulations. A significant boost to this conservation endeavor comes from the federal government, with a $13 million contribution forming part of a combined $64 million investment sourced from public and private donors.

This initiative is unveiled in anticipation of the upcoming annual United Nations biodiversity summit, where discussions are anticipated to center around the global advancements towards conservation objectives. Ottawa’s recent introduction of a $3.8-billion nature protection strategy earlier this year aims to bring Canada closer to achieving its conservation targets, following a report by the federal environmental watchdog that highlighted a shortfall of over one million square kilometers in reaching the goal of protecting 25 percent of the country’s lands and inland waters by 2025.
