The province’s seasonal vaccination campaign started with a bang on Tuesday, with over 100,000 appointments quickly booked as health officials anticipate an early flu season.
Quebec health authorities are urging residents, especially those at high risk for respiratory illnesses, to get vaccinated against the flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Appointments can be scheduled online through Clic Santé, starting on October 20.
While certain vulnerable groups are eligible for free vaccinations, others will need to pay between $30 and $50. Free shots are available for seniors aged 65 and older, residents of senior homes, individuals with chronic conditions, pregnant women, caregivers, and those living with vulnerable populations.
Dr. Caroline Quach-Thanh, Quebec’s public health director, warned that the flu season is expected to start earlier this year based on current trends.
The flu positivity rate has risen to 2.4% in recent weeks, while COVID-19 rates remain stable at 5.0%. Dr. Quach-Thanh emphasized the importance of early vaccination before the holiday season.
Flu vaccines take two weeks to become fully effective and offer protection for about six months. While effectiveness can vary, vaccination is recommended by health officials to reduce the risk of flu-related complications and hospitalizations.
The government aims to vaccinate at least 80% of high-risk individuals against the flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Last year’s rate was around 60%.
Within hours of the campaign’s launch, over 100,000 appointments were already scheduled, indicating a significant increase compared to previous years.
