B.C. Conservative Campaign Director Clings to Position Amid Social Media Controversy, Doerkson Confirms

The leader of the B.C. Conservatives has confirmed that the party’s election campaign director, Katy Merrifield, will remain in her position despite recent controversy surrounding a social media post.

During a June social media post, Merrifield used an offensive term in conjunction with Islam, which was promptly removed. Interim party leader Lorne Doerkson defended Merrifield during a question at the B.C. leaders’ debate, emphasizing that she will not be stepping down.

Doerkson highlighted that Merrifield, who is a survivor of sexual violence, made the post during a difficult moment of trauma. However, BC NDP Leader David Eby criticized Doerkson’s decision to retain Merrifield, accusing him of downplaying the seriousness of her actions. Eby described Merrifield’s online presence as resembling the dark corners of the internet.

The exchange between Eby and Doerkson escalated as they traded barbs over alleged offensive comments made by candidates from both parties. Concerns over Merrifield’s social media post had previously been raised by the NDP and Muslim organizations, with calls for the Conservatives to address the issue.
