North York Welcomes the Return of the Meta Centre Film Festival for Its Star-Studded Second Year!

The Meta Centre Film Festival in North York is back for its second year, celebrating the creativity of individuals with developmental and cognitive disabilities. Hosted at the York Woods Library Theatre, the festival features a collection of short films crafted by 25 clients of the Meta Centre.

As a non-profit organization supporting individuals with disabilities across the Greater Toronto Area, the Meta Centre initiated a unique project called “Frame by Frame”. Over the past year, participants delved into the world of filmmaking, exploring various aspects of the craft.

Allyson Quiroz, a dedicated support independent living worker at the Meta Centre, noted that the project served as a platform for participants to realize their creative potential and showcase their abilities.

The “Frame by Frame” project not only nurtures confidence but also promotes community engagement. Quiroz expressed joy in witnessing the participants’ sense of accomplishment and pride upon completing their films.

Renjie Li, a local filmmaker and the Director of Rynergy Media House, collaborated with the Meta Centre to develop the curriculum for “Frame by Frame”. The program adopts a hands-on approach, enabling participants to learn about filmmaking processes firsthand and explore various community locations.

Local businesses, such as a taekwondo school, a car dealership, and a restaurant, generously provided their spaces for participants to bring their film projects to fruition, emphasizing the importance of community inclusion.

The diverse array of films created through the project encompasses genres ranging from documentaries to horror. Li’s ultimate goal is to empower participants to continue their filmmaking journey independently, fostering a supportive environment where they can create content at their own pace.
