Mathieu Lévesque Named Interim Leader of CAQ Coalition
Mathieu Lévesque, former CAQ Member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the Outaouais region, has been appointed as the interim leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) on Saturday following the resignation of Christine Fréchette. Fréchette stepped down after the party’s disappointing performance in the recent provincial election.
Expressing his commitment to the party, Lévesque stated, “I deeply believe that we represent the true third way. Now we have to do some introspection all together. That is why I humbly welcome this important responsibility.”
Having served as the minister responsible for youth and minister for the regions in Fréchette’s government, Lévesque now faces the challenging task of rebuilding the party, which had 79 members in the National Assembly before the election.
Despite not retaining his seat in the last election, Lévesque’s extensive involvement with the CAQ, dating back to 2012 as a founding member, makes him a familiar and respected figure within the party. CAQ President Sarah Beaumier emphasized his deep understanding of the party’s values and history.
Various political figures, including former CAQ premier Christine Fréchette and premier-designate Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, have offered their support and well-wishes to Lévesque in his new role.
As a lawyer by profession and a member of the Quebec Bar since 2013, Lévesque brings a diverse background to his leadership position. His book, “La Couleur CAQ,” published in 2022, offers insights into the party’s identity and ideology.
